Draw Your World by WinterPromise

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNER!!!!

TINA

I have home schooled my children from day one. 19 years of learning...WOW. We have covered a lot of information in that time.  I'm not so sure how much learning the children have done, but I can say that I have learned more these past 19 years then I did in my 13 years of education :)  But I have NEVER taught  geography.  I know, I know....shame on me.  My 3 oldest children are geography illiterate and it is because of me.  Sorry!

This year I decided that I needed a geography lesson, so I searched and searched to find what I was looking for.  I wanted something that helped to remember where a certain country was in the world.  Not just a bunch of facts about that country, but where it actually was located.  The search seemed fruitless for many days.  There isn't that much out there for geography.  I did order something that was recommended to me, but after looking it over it just didn't fit.

Then I came upon WinterPromise.  They have a book called Draw Your World .
 On their website I read:
"Step-by-Step Instruction to Learn to Draw the Continents by Heart.
Learn world geography by drawing the continents with memory tools that help students get acquainted with the countries of the world and recall where to place the continent on latitude and longitude lines. Practical suggestions allow students to practice in small steps and gain mastery of drawing the continents with their country boundaries.

It certainly sounded like what I was looking for....so I ordered it.  Just hoping that this time I wouldn't have wasted my money and time.  The price certainly was more reasonable than the first program I ordered for $60..  Only $19.00, how could I go wrong?

This guide is written by Kayrn Brooks a home school mom who lived in my home state, Vermont, when she wrote it.  That is 2 pluses already and I haven't even opened the book yet!

The first page gives an overview which states:
"Your student will be moving from continent to continent, working through a process by which they should be able to learn about a continents's major landforms and water features, its countries and boundaries.  For each continent, they will  learn by doing, They'll make maps, invent some creative designs, and learn to draw each continent by repeated practice."
Okay, so far so good!  But the proof is in the doing!

We have completed 11 "sketches" in Draw Your World.  This book is exactly what I was looking for.  Beginning with learning the continents and major bodies of water we moved onto the continent of Europe.  I now know what countries and major landforms on in this continent!  Now to the memorizing and drawing :)

I can see that by the end of the year we will be know the countries and major landforms in each continent and be able to draw them by memory.  That's exciting.  I recommended this book to a friend and we now get together once a week to review what we've done and play some geography games.
