In my 28 years of marriage and handling finances I have read plenty of financial books.   Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover  and his overall philosophy about money is the only one that my husband and I have consistantly followed and had success with.  I think part of that success is Dave's approach.  He is an in your face, down-to-earth, straight talker who isn't afraid to tell you what he thinks.---Hmmmm....that sounds a lot like someone I live with ; )---  His bluntness and  honesty will not appeal to all, but what he has to say is worth listening to.

His advice is appealing because he has been at every financial place imaginable. From millionaire, more than once, to being broke.  He has followed what he teaches and KNOWS that it works!  For me, it's much easier to take advice from someone who has been where I'm at and has successfully moved forward.

I have taught my children his ideas and encouraged them to handle their finances in a similar way.  I know his plan works, because I practice it.

This book is all about NO DEBT; meaning that you should pay for everything using only cash.   Yes, EVERYTHING.....save for it and pay for it.  But how do you start?

He lays out a 7 'baby step' plan to get you there:

1.  Save $1000 as an emergency fund
2.  Pay off all debts using a method called "The debt snowball"
3.  Build up a 3 - 6 month emergency fund
4.  Invest 15% of household income into Roth IRAs and pre-tax retirement
5.  Start a college fund for children
6.  Pay off your house mortgage early
7.  Now you are in a position to build wealth and give

The book also has budgeting forms to help you implement the ideas you've read about.  There are testimonials of people who have successfully used the above 'baby steps' to reach financial independence.

This is a complete self-help book in the area of finances.  Dave's no nonsense style is a great motivation to get moving toward financial freedom.  With the state of our economy, now is the perfect time to take control of your money so that it no longer has to control you.
