CONGRATULATIONS TO STACY FOR WINNING
I am really excited about this giveaway. When I read that you can actually MAKE your own candy I just knew I had to give it a try. We could choose from chocolate, gummies or chewing gum. My choice would have been chocolate, but when I asked the kids which one they wanted to make, they replied with gummies or gum. So we did both!
Here are the two kits and all the stuff included!
Inside each Make Your Own Chewing Gum Kit you'll find: chewing gum base (containing natural chicle), confectioner's sugar, corn syrup, natural cinnamon and cherry flavors, a pan for softening the chicle gum base, instructions and the story of chicle.
Inside each Make Your Own Gummies Kit you'll find: sour mix, colored and flavored sugar, powdered seaweed, seaweed, molding starch, instructions and the story of carrageenan.
Everything you need is included! The instructions are very simple to follow. "Now children can make yummy treats while learning about: the rainforest, ethnobotany, chemistry, mathematics and measurement, ecology and environmental issues, home economics, nutrition, the oceans and more!" Each kit comes with a story about how the main ingredient is harvested. It tells of a child's job in that process. Eduardo of Guatemala helps tapping trees for chicle an ingredient in gum and Divina from the Phillippines grows seaweed to sell. (an ingredient in the gummies)
Now onto the process of gum making:
Here we are adding corn syrup to the melted chicle gum base
The directions warned us that it was a sticky goo. It surely was VERY sticky. I would recommend mixing the chicle gum base up with a plastic spoon. We used a metal one and it was extremely difficult to get the melted, sticky goo off from it.
Kneading the sticky gum dough on confectioner's sugar. A lot of kneading was necessary to get it to a consistancy that could be rolled out.
Rolling out the gum dough
Our finished gum pieces!
The kit contains 2 flavors: cherry and cinnamon. Cinnamon was my favorite!
Now onto the gummies.......
Spreading out the corn starch to make "molds" for our gummies
You can use anything you want to make your mold. The kit suggested straws to get worms. That is what we chose. Plus a few holes for gummy drops!
Time to pour our mixture into the mold. This was tough to do.
The liquid ended up covering the whole plate of cornstarch
But that was ok as we were able to cut out our worms and drops!
This was a very enjoyable and educational activity! The kids decided that the gum was their favorite!

ReplyDeleteHow interesting: The Mayans used chicle (the base for natural chewing gum) for lots of things - glue for arts, crafts, and architecture, in blow guns, and, of course, to chew!

Well, sine I have a 2 y.o. who would want to help make the candy, and since I really don't want to end the project by having to cut gum from his beautiful golden curls, I'd go with the Gummies Kit. Plus, my 12 y.o. prefers them over gum!
