Set Enterprises offers some really fun-filled family games. One of their games is called Five Crowns.  


Description from website:

Five Crowns® is a card game for the whole family. It has original game play, but uses skills that you have obtained from playing your old favorites like Hearts, Spades and Rummy. Because Five Crowns has five Royal Families -- the Stars, the Clubs, the Hearts, the Spades and the Diamonds -- yes, five suits in the old usage, it allows a more equal chance of making a book or a run, effectively giving each player more possibilities to readjust their hand so as to go out. The play starts with three cards and the 3s are wild; the next hand has four cards and the 4s are wild.... working up to the last hand when the Kings are wild. Each of the Royal Families is portrayed in original art and has its own colors. Five Crowns®is a fast paced, ingenious new game in eleven rounds.


I found this game to be just as described...only the description doesn't talk about how much fun it really is!  


Our first game involved myself, my teenage son & daughter and my 79 year old dad.  Yes, it really IS for the whole family.  Although dad kept acting as if he didn't "get" it...he kept going out and whopped us all!  I jokingly said that if a half-blind, old man can play and win....then it is a game for anyone!

A couple of things I like about this game.  It is very easy to learn.  Once you get the idea, it's simple.  You just have to remember which cards are wild.  A couple of times I discarded the wild :(  The next player was very happy with my lapse of memory!  It is a fast game.  It only takes about an hour to complete...great for right after supper or as a break in a school day. 


While I'm on the topic of school, Set Enterprises offers other games that can be used to teach.  One is called SET that has a free mathematics workbook to download to be used with the card game.                                                                                      Another is Quiddler which is a spelling game. I played this one a few years ago with my mom.  We both are good spellers, I just have a tough time thinking up words TO spell!
Then there's Xactika, which sounds like a very challenging strategy game.  

Even though Five Crowns is not advertised as an educational tool, I feel it can be used as one if you are a bit creative. It can be used to recognize numbers, colors, and shapes.  Or as a good practice in sequencing.  Or even memory and matching. 


I have been accused of only doing reviews for games I win....well, let me tell you, I  CAN'T WIN THIS GAME!!!  I don't know why, but I've yet to win...but I do love to play it.


Also, at the Set Enterprise website are free daily puzzles to work on.  There are puzzles for the games Set, Quiddler and Xactika
