HOME SCHOOLLING

Never, ever, ever would I have thought 25 years ago that one of the biggest parts of my life would be home schooling.

When I first heard about it I thought you'd have to be absolutely crazy to do it (well,  maybe you do!)

My best friend, Misty, talked with me about it when her first child was 3.  No children had graced our home as yet, so when she started talking about home schooling I knew she had lost it!  Seriously, who does THAT?  But knowing her, I figured it was just another weird idea that she was having.  She'd get over it.....ha!  Nope, she never did....after 8 children and over 25 years, she's still going strong!

Well, this odd idea became less strange after I had my first child and she started to get to schooling age. I just couldn't imagine sending her away ALL day.  Come on!  I'd been with her 24/7 for 4 years.  Plus, I was with her for all her firsts:  cry, word, step, food, potty...on and on.  I wanted to experience her first read word, or her first 1 + 1 = 2, or the awe in learning about nature.  So, yea, my decision was based on selfishness.  And I never turned back!

Today, I have graduated 4 out of 5 students.

Where are they today you ask?

#1 is a successful cosmetologist to be married in August
#2 still loves children so she is a beloved teacher at a day care, soon to be a nanny to 3 children, married for 2 years
#3 hard working machinist, and rebuilding a truck
#4 at home working with his dad building log homes and various other wood projects

Each one loves God, serves others, works hard, is caring, a law-abiding citizen, and lives a happy, productive life.

Sounds like I made a wise choice!

  1. I am a big believer in homeschooling too. I first heard about it while I was in college and I put in many research hours and nearly used it as part of my master's thesis. Years later I home schooled our two youngest lovelies through the middle school years and it made all the difference! Good for you for devoting yourself to this very worthwhile effort!

    1. It's much more known about and popular today than 25 years ago

    1. Welcome, SISTER !!!

I never had any gripes with the public school. I think they fail only because the parents don't take a vested interest in their child's education. They look at school as a baby sitter...

  3. You make it sound like a lot of fun. I don't have kids but if I did I would probably use this as an excuse to keep them all to myself lol :)

    1. I always loved school also, thus my distaste for home schooling when I first heard about it.
The other benefit of home schooling is the education I received :)

  5. I don't really have the patience for home schooling. I think that giving them a little of space to learn from a prepared teacher (as opposed to me who would mostly improvise my lessons) makes us appreciate more the time we get to spend together. Since I write from home, I still spend with them most of the day and I don't feel I'm missing anything. My hat's off to you and any other mother brave and patient enough to chose this route.
