Potato Donut recipe

A couple months ago a reader asked me for my potato donut recipe.  As you realize, I have not been posting on this blog very much at all.  Life has taken over and I haven't taken the time to write.  I am HOPING to change all that, but I'm not making any promises.  Please keep checking back, never know, there may be something interesting you might miss ;)

2 Cups flour (I use unbleached white, but sometimes sneak in a bit of freshly ground spelt)
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
2 teaspoons baking powder

Combine the above in a bowl

1 Cup mashed potato
2 eggs
1 Cup sugar (I use turbinado which is a 1:1 exchange with white sugar)

Mix these 3 ingredients until smooth

Add the dry to the wet, mix until smooth dough

You will need A LOT of flour to roll it out on.  The dough is sticky.

On floured surface, roll dough to about 1/2 inch thick.  Cut.  Makes 12-15 depending on how thick you roll your dough.

Fry in hot oil (sorry, I don't know the temp of the oil.  I pop a hole in the oil, if bubbles form around it, I know the oil is ready)

Do you have a potato donut recipe?  Is it different than mine?
If yes, please share your recipe in the comments.

Anyone know of a good BAKED donut?

Amazing Action Alphabet Review & Giveaway

The See Hear Do Company incorporates all your child's senses in this flip book and audio CD to teach the sounds of the alphabet.  They use things that children love; animals, stories, music, action, repetition, fun, imagination and more as tools to help your child enjoy learning.

Here is the ideology behind this program:

Step 1 Seeing
The child sees the shape of the adorable
animal is the shape of the letter
(visual stimulation).

Step 2 Hearing
The child hears an amusing story and learns
the name and sound of the letter
(auditory stimulation).

Step 3 Doing
The child does a fun action with their body
that produces instant recall for the
sound of the letter
(kinesthetic stimulation).

You can listen to an example of what the audio CD contains here.

The songs are fun and catchy.  I did not like a couple of the songs because the words were hard to understand.  Thankfully, the flip book contains the words to the songs to follow along.

All in all, I think your child will enjoy learning the sounds of the alphabet using this resource.

Does History Repeat Itself? I think YES!

I have been reading through the books of the minor prophets in the Bible recently.  Amazingly what I am reading sounds like what is happening all around me---people living for themselves, enjoying pleasure more than what is right, wars, unjust courts, odd weather patterns, an over abundance of disease, wrong and right confused....I could go on and on.

There is nothing new under the sun.  Man is still man, but more importantly God is still God and THAT, my friend, is my hope.

In their day, even these prophets wondered if God knew what was going on and how long He was going to let it continue.  They were reminded, even as I am, that God is very merciful not wanting anyone to perish.  He is long suffering, giving each one of us the opportunity to repent and turn to Him.  BUT He leaves the choice to us.

Let me share with you a few verses from my readings:

Tearing your clothes is not enough to show you are sad; let your heart be broken.
Come back to the Lord your God, because he is kind and shows mercy.
He doesn’t become angry quickly, and he has great love. He can change his mind about doing harm. (Joel 2:13 NCV)

The Lord has told you, what is good; he has told you what he wants from you:
to do what is right to other people, love being kind to others, and live humbly, obeying your God. (Micah 6:8 NCV)

The Lord is good, giving protection in times of trouble. He knows who trusts in him. (Nahum 1:7 NCV)

The evil nation is very proud of itself; it is not living as it should. But those who are right with God will live by faith. (Habakkuk 2:4 NCV)

The last part of the verse above , "but those who are right with God will live by faith." is quoted 3 times in the New Testament.

Faith is reason at rest with God......

My business is to have that faith,
God's is to do His will.........

so let's 'mind our own business' and let God mind His.

Writing in Our Home School

I love to write, but writing takes me a lot of time to get it right.  I'm not gifted at all.  I write, rewrite and write again. I can't tell  you how many times I change a sentence, add a word, take out a portion.  It takes me a long time to get what I want written in a way I want it to say it.

This has caused me to have a hard time finding a writing curriculum for our home school over the years.   We've tried several, some worked, some not so much.

This year we are trying out Wordsmith by Common Sense Press.

It starts off reviewing the parts of speech.  That's always a know what word to use where!

The first writing assignments are basically  just changing generic words to  more specific ones. This is to  make your writing come alive....

Here is an example
When the knock came, Sally walked to the door and opened it.  She looked at the stranger for a few seconds, then said, "Your'e too late.  Horace left an hour ago."  Without another word, she closed the door.

The student is asked to change specific words to show emotion.

Here are my daughter's edits:
When the knock came, Sally strolled to the door and opened it.  She peered at the stranger for a few seconds, then sniffed, "You're too late.  Horace left an hour ago."  Without another word, she closed the door.

When the student has a feel for word usage and painting a picture with specific words, they move onto making the sentences stronger.  This is done by switching words around to change the meaning or emphasize a particular portion.

The last section of the book gets down to types of writing; descriptive, narrative, dialogue, point of view etc.  I am thinking by the time we get to this section my daughter will be confident and able to write anything asked of her.

We have only used this book for 2 weeks now, but I've got to admit that I do like it. The biggest plus so far is that I don't get the rolled eyes and groans when it's time to pull out Wordsmith, like I did with last year's writing curriculum I chose.

When I asked my 14 year old daughter what she thought of it, her response was:
"Way better than last year, for sure.  AND I'm having fun with the thesaurus".

I received a copy of Wordsmith as part of Because Mom Said, Timberdoodle's review program, in exchange for my honest review.

Oransi Fridge Air Purifier

What an odd looking little thingy, don't you think?

Here's a little about what it is and what it does:
Featuring patented Piezo-electric technology your refrigerator is cleaned silently without the harmful side effects of ozone that is found in standard ionizers.

It really does what it says...purifies your fridge.

I have had mine in my fridge for about a month and I must say that it does seem to work.  I haven't noticed any foul odors when I open the fridge door.  I'm not sure how else I would know if it was working.....

If you like eco-friendly, you'll like what Oransi offers.  I've tried 2 of their products and have been very happy with both of them.

You can follow Oransi on Facebook or Twitter.

Oransi asked me if I'd do another review for them in exchange for the product.   I did one on their Robby Wash Ball, which I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the more I use it!

Whisk Bliss review

I was sent a sample pack of Whisk Bliss
to try in exchange for my honest review.

It was truly 'blissful' to use this product, Whisk Bliss from Shirley J.  Why do I say this?  Because it was simple, simple, simple to use.

I do not really enjoy cooking as much as I used to, so when I find a product that helps me to have a meal ready within minutes, I'm sold!

I was able to put a yummy cheddar broccoli cheese soup on the table in under 30 minutes.  Now that's FAST!

This soup was creamy and delicious.

I received a sample package of Whisk Bliss.  The directions on the bag stated the soup would feed 3.....I'd say more like 2.

What IS Whisk Bliss you ask?
Whisk Bliss is a unique UNIVERSAL COOKING BASE that creates quick and delicious sauces, soups, and endless savory sensations that are healthy for you and your family.

Shirley J has other items on her website to help you with meal preparation.  I encourage you to go check it out!
