2014 For One Another Challenge: Swap a book

I am a book lover...always have been.  I used to dream of having a room filled with bookcases overflowing with books.

With the boom of technology, books are becoming less and less of a desired item.  Sure, people are still reading, but on their phone, tablet, laptop..whatever.  The book that you hold in your hand and turn the page is becoming much less popular.

Trust in the Lord

I'm wondering if I am alone in the struggle I battle in trusting God with everything.  My head knows that He is in control and only allows what is best, but my heart doubts...ALOT!!!

I spend countless hours crying and worrying and praying for what I 'think' is best, knowing the whole time that God is going to do what He's going to do.

Really, I want to trust and believe that when something to me looks 'bad' that it really could be for my 'good', but too often my thoughts lead me elsewhere.

For One Another 2014 Challenge: Tips

I am known by my family as a penny pinching tipper at a restaurant.  I will tip the average 20% IF the service I received was excellent.  The percentage drops as I consider what type of service was given.

There have been times that I have left what would be considered an 'insulting' tip....I do that to leave a  message....the service was NOT acceptable.

I will reward behavior as I judge it. I am the consumer and I feel that is what tipping is all about.

Well, I guess of I'm the 'older generation' cuz my kids get mad at me when I don't tip well.  So I tell them...
"Go ahead and leave whatever you want,
this is what the service was worth to me."

How about next time you and I go out to eat, leave a super generous tip no matter what the service. (ugh, this will be so HARD for me!)   If you'd like, also leave a note telling them that you wanted to bless them today.

I know this challenge is not original.  I've read several instances of people doing this all over the internet in the last year....so, it's been done, but it is a great idea.  I'm sure all the food service people wish it was done every time :)

For One Another 2014 Challenge: Share with one another

Have you ever done freezer meals?  I did this a couple of times. And of course blogged about it.  Go ahead and read about it.....here and here.

But today my challenge is this.....

In case you don't want to click on over to what the challenge is I'll tell you....

Basically I want you to make a double meal of whatever you are making and share the 2nd meal with a neighbor, shut-in, friend, pastor.....whomever you wish!  When they ask, "What's this for?"  Tell them "just because I can!".

I'd love to hear what you made and the reaction from the person you surprised....

For One Another 2014 Challenge: Fellowship

I'm not very good at keeping in touch with people.  Life just seems to take over and I don't make the effort to call friends far away.

Are you like me?  If yes, the I challenge you today to take the time to call someone you haven't had a chance to talk to in a while.  Set aside a few minutes and call them to tell them you are thinking of them.

You never know, that call may be just want they needed :)

1 John 1:7

New International Version (NIV)
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

For One Another 2014 Challenge: Donate blood

I have never given blood.  Many, many years ago I tried to at a blood drive where I worked.  I was told that I didn't weight enough to do so.

I checked the Red Cross website for eligibility requirements.  Here they are:

Blood Donors Must:

  • Be healthy*
  • Be at least 17 years old in most states, or 16 years old with parental consent if allowed by state law  see more information for 16-year old donors »
  • Weigh at least 110 lbs.
Additional weight requirements apply for donors 18 years old and younger and all high school donors.
Looks like I still can't give blood.  Guess that's not a bad thing seeing that I'm barely 5 feet tall!    ;)

Seeing that I don't meet the weight requirements, how about YOU give blood on my behalf?

You may save a life!

For One Another 2014 challenge: Leave a surprise

Simple task today.

If you find yourself somewhere with a vending machine, leave a couple dollars for someone to use.

Too bad you couldn't also leave a hidden camera to get the reaction :)

For One Another 2014 Challenge: Bear One Another's burdens

Have you ever been driving along and come to a toll when you realize you have NO CASH!!  That's never happened to me but it has happened to my daughter twice in the past couple of months.

How about the next time you pass through a toll you pay for the person behind you.

Imagine the conversation when they get home and share with their family what happened.
"you will never believe what happened to  me today...someone paid my toll, how cool is that?"

Galatians 6:2:  Bear one another's burdens......

Go ahead and give it a try....

For One Another 2014 Challenge: Honor One Another

Have you ever had a complete stranger give you a compliment?  It's kind of nice, isn't it?

How about someone you live with?  Now that's could be more rare than a stranger, but it shouldn't be.

Give a compliment to everyone that you cross paths with today.  Just watch their face light up as you notice them in a special way.

You don't have to be elaborate....a simple, "I love your hair that way", or "Is that a new shirt?  It looks very nice on you", or even "you really are great at that, ya know?"

Honor one another above yourselves.
Romans 12:10

For One Another 2014 Challenge: Make a child's day

Here's an easy one and sure to bring a smile to you too!

Next time you are in a store that sells balloons, buy one for a child in the store.

One suggestion though:

Make sure you ask their parent first :)

For One Another 2014 Challenge: Forgive One Another

Think of someone who you feel has wronged you.  That person that when you hear their name you kind of cringe inside.

I'm quite sure you thought of a name.....I know I did.  Now pray for God to give you the forgiveness to really, truly forgive that person....YES----THAT PERSON!!!!

Go get a pen and paper...write their name down, the date and the words:  I forgive you.  This is your reminder that you have forgiven them so put it away for safe keeping,  for the time you feel the unforgiveness taking over again.

Forgiveness....sometimes very tough to do.  BUT if we think about how much we have been forgiven, certainly should make it easier!

Today you embrace forgiveness and set yourself free from the bitterness and hate.  Sure maybe they don't deserve it but

NEITHER DO YOU!

Jolly VoxBox from Influenster

I signed up with Influenster.com in January of 2013 and forgot all about it until one day in December 2013 I received an email with a survey to complete.  So I clicked on over.  Within a couple of weeks I received my very first VoxBox.

Here is what I received and my thoughts about each:

Rimmel London Show Off Lip Lacquer

I am not a huge make-up person.  I wear a little cover-up and mascara.  Sometimes I will use lipstick and eye shadow, but not often.
My oldest daughter is BIG into fashion and make-up....so when she saw my VoxBox she gave this a try.
Her response was, "I don't like this at all.  It has a horrible smell and the color is awful! I would never buy it"
Harsh?  Well, I agree with the smell and the color.  It smells like oil and the color is just plain ugly.

Sorry Rimmel London...we won't be showing this off!

NYC New York Color HD Color Trio Eye Shadow

I've used NYC eye shadow before and liked it.  My daughter saw the brand and said, "That's junk".  Well, she buys the high end expensive stuff, so this is just fine for me.

I received #781 Long Beach Sands....perfect name :)

Ducklings Mini Rolls

Not much of a duck tape user, but the mini roll I received came just in time for me to use on my broken glasses.  It was tough and held my glasses together just fine!

Puffs

There is no doubt that Puffs is the best tissue out there.  It really does keep a nose from becoming sore from many wipes.  This travel size came in handy over the holiday while my granddaughter was visiting.  They kept her nose from getting boo-boos with the many needed wipes.

Skinny Cow Candy
I normally keep candy out of the house.  IF it's here, I will eat it!  Skinny Cow makes a nice candy without the guilt.  Only 130 calories per pouch with 3 candies in each pouch.  Definitely enough for any sweet tooth.

I look forward to another Influenster VoxBox in 2014.  Who knows what they will send me next?

For One Another 2014 Challenge: Pajama day

Make today an "I'm not getting out of my pajama's" day!

This kind of day is just a laid back relaxing one.  Play games, watch a movie, eat junk food, read a book....RELAX!

Sometimes we just need to stop for a day and take a deep breath.....don't worry, your 'to-do list' will still be there tomorrow.

HAVE FUN

For One Another 2014 Challenge: Serve One Another

Yesterday's challenge was to speak 3 powerful words...."I Love You".  But speaking those words is not enough...action is required.

The Bible speaks of the greatest love in John 15:13:

Greater love has no one than this,
that someone lay down his life for his friends.

Jesus, the perfect example gave His life for us.

There are men and women serving and loving us daily in the military.  Some even giving their lives.  The sacrifices they and their families make is incomprehensible to me.  Stop and think about the little things you enjoy everyday with your family...the things that you don't usually notice:

  • a "good morning"
  • sharing a cup of coffee
  • a smile
  • having a meal together
  • a warm embrace
  • laying your head next to theirs at night
  • a wave
  • laughing
  • even arguing
Oh soooo many more 'little' things.  Yet there are thousands who have chosen to serve YOU and miss out on all of that.

Take time today to say thank you.

You can write a letter, a card or even send a package. Operation Gratitude is a great place to start.

If in your daily life you happen to see someone dressed in military attire, stop and acknowledge your gratefulness to them with a smile, handshake, hug or a simple thank you.

But most importantly.....

PRAY FOR THEM

For One Another 2014 Challenge: Love One Another

The words, "I LOVE YOU" hold so much power.  Just 3 little words yet they can turn a frown to a smile, a bad day into a better day, an angry word to a loving one, a foe to a friend, a cry to a laugh, a broken heart to a healing one.

But these words have no meaning unless they are backed with action.  That's when "I love you" has the most meaning.  As in the verse above, Jesus gave His LIFE because He loves!

Today will you join me and begin to be more giving in using 3 simple words to encourage?

It's not so hard,
say :

I LOVE YOU

then

SHOW IT

For One Another 2014 Challenge: Encourage One Another

ForOneAnother

When I started this blog I named it For One Another for a reason.  My plan was to use it to help others to live a life of encouragement to one another.  Thus my theme verse at the top of this blog:

1 Thessalonians 5:11
Therefore encourage one another and build one another up!

Let's start 2014 with some ideas of HOW to encourage one another. I am going to attempt to come up with easy ways we can live "encouraging one another and building one another up" Hopefully, over time,  a habit of encouragement is developed even if it's only in a small way.

Let's get started!

As a blogger sometimes I get discouraged.  Writing posts takes times.....a lot of time.  I can't tell you how often I'll write something, then hit delete and try again.  Bloggers work HARD at what they do yet often it seems to go unnoticed.

There is something you can do to encourage a blogger.....

COMMENT

On some posts I've had as many as 200 views yet no one comments....not one word :(  Yea, this is very discouraging.

Starting today any blog that you visit, leave a comment.  It doesn't have to be long, just a "hi, I enjoyed reading this today".  Or something about the post that you liked or even disagreed with.
If you want a bigger challenge, comment on a least 5 Facebook posts today too!

Try it!  I guarantee you will bring a smile to a bloggers face if you take a couple of minutes to comment.

You can practice right here by commenting below :)
