Self-discipline and the 30 Day Shred

DAY 22
3/31/12


Saturday...who wants to get out of bed and work-out on a Saturday. Certainly NOT ME! 






A month ago I would have talked myself out of it no problem.  But not only am I toning my body, but I am toning my self-discipline.


I dragged, literally, myself out of bed and got to it.  I wish I could say I breezed through it...well, I can until that last circut with the squat and v-flys.  I still can't make it through those. BUT that set is the only one that I can't complete.  Once I can, I'll know I'm ready to move onto level 3!


There is a benefit to exercising everyday instead of every other...the habit.  Knowing that at a certain time everyday is exercise time is kind of like knowing that 6 PM is supper time.  It just happens EVERY day around that time.  No questions asked, you just do it.  


The doc tells me that I don't have arthritis in my knees.  It is patella femoral syndrome.  I have an appointment on Tuesday I go to physical therapy.  Maybe those exercises will be what I can be sure to do on my shred day off to keep the daily habit.

Is the Gospel for Believers?


Because He Loves Me written by Elyse Fitzpatrick is all about the gospel and God's love.  Does that make you yawn and say, "I know all that!" ?  The author begins with very challenging questions.  Ones like:

  • What does His transforming love mean to you today?
  • Are you more focused on your performance for Him or His for you?
  • At the end of the day is their rest in your soul because of Him, or is there guilt and a determination that tomorrow you are going to "do better"?
  • Do you still feel the need to prove that you are "not all that bad" ?
  • Can you describe how Jesus has transformed your DAILY life?
Beginning with the story in Luke 2 of Mary and Joseph  leaving Jesus behind in Jerusalem, then frantically searching for him when a day later they discover he is no longer with them.  And taking 3 days to finally find him.  Elyse asks us to compare ourselves to his earthly parents.  At salvation we joyously celebrate Jesus, but as the days go by we go back to our Nazareth without a conscious awareness of Jesus in our day to day lives.  We spend so much time trying to live FOR Him, that we forget HIM.  

She states:  "We love to remember him at Christmas and Easter.  We adore Him as the baby in the manger, we rejoice over the empty tomb.  But aside from these 2 seasons, our attention is primarily focused on us, on our performance, on our spiritual growth."

Think about it.....

Do you view salvation as Jesus' work but living the Christian life your work?  

That, my friend, is the million dollar question...

Spiritual Exercise



I have been physically exercising almost every day for almost a month now, yet I have neglected my spiritual exercise.  Today that is changing!

Last fall I attended a ladies conference at Word Of Life in Schroon Lake, NY.  Elyse Fitzpatrick was the guest speaker. Her theme was the above book.

It took 2 of the seminars for me to finally 'get' was she was trying to say.  At first I was appalled at her message, but after I took some time to pray and ask for some discernment, I was truly blessed.  Having to rethink some things is not easy, yet very rewarding!

I bought the DVD set, book and workbook to take home to share with the ladies at my church.  That has not occurred as yet.  Today I decided to pull it out and go through it myself. 

The first part is "Have you Forgotten?"  

For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith . . .For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins.
2 Peter 1:5, 10

When you read the above verses, what do you focus on?  What you NEED to do OR what Christ has already done for you?

  • Why does the incarnation, sinless life, substitutionary death, bodily resurrection and ascension (the gospel) matter to you today?
Elyse reminds us that we are so thrilled with what Christ has done for us when we begin our Christian walk, but then it morphs into something about us.  

We forget our Savior!  

Can you relate?  I know I can.

Where is your attention primarily focused?  In other words, what do you think about most?
  • your desires?
  • your sins?
  • or your Savior?

30 Day Shred Challenge and my knees

DAY TWENTY
3/27/12
I think I missed a day of journalling my 30 day shred...but I've not been consistent since vacation, so it really doesn't matter.

My knees have still been giving me ALOT of pain, therefore, I decided as soon as I returned home from vacation I would make a doctor visit.

That visit was today. 

My knee trouble is one of 2 things:

  arthritis 
She feels I'm too young for this, but x-rays were taken to be sure.

OR



  sounds bad doesn't it? 
 It's basically 'runner's knee' where too much stress is put on the knee.

She is leaning toward this diagnosis which will require physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around the knee.

 The bad good news is that she says I can continue my 30 day shred.  Which I just did.


I did not use hand weights the few times I shredded while on vacation, so today was the first day with level 2 using hand weights.....OUCH!


I had a tough time, a VERY tough time, but I pushed through with a few 5 second breaks.  It felt good to get into it hard and sweat!


Hopefully now that I am home I will get back into a good routine and hammer this out every day.  


Oh yea, the doc says that I've lost 2 pounds!

30 Day Shred Challenge on vacation


DAY NINETEEN
3/19/12


PLANK ON THE BEACH!!!


I've stated more than once that vacation and exercise don't go together very well.  There are several reasons for that.
  • no time
  • no energy
  • no room
  • no desire
  • no FUN
I missed 4 days in a row.....now don't start yelling at me quite yet.  I've not been lying around doing nothing.  I have walked more than I ever do and swam in the ocean fighting the currents for 3 hours.  Believe me THAT is exercise.  I was wiped for 2 days after our beach adventure. 
I loved every single minute of it though!

Admittedly I was getting stiff.  Even though I've not just been sitting around, I've also not been working the muscles that Jillian works everyday.  So today I knew I had to get back to it.  

It was tough, very tough.  My knees are STILL bothering me quite a bit.   I've really got to do some research to find out what I can do about it.  I don't want to stop the exercise, yet I also don't want to permanently damage my knees.  Any suggestions?

Tomorrow we begin our trip home.  Honestly, I'm ready to be home.  Vacation is a blast, but home is.....well  HOME

30 Day Shred Level 2 and the HATED plank!

DAY EIGHTEEN
3/14/12

I missed yet another day of my 30 day shred.  Vacationing and exercising do not go together.  BUT I did walk at least 2 miles and swam for 15 minutes, so I wasn't just sitting around!

Today I started Level 2....

amid the groans, I yelled at Jillian with an "are you kidding me?"

Can I just say that I HATE plank moves?  My daughter told me to practice just holding a plank, wish I would have been doing that right along.  My wrists are not going to be able to  hold up under these:
If you think this looks easy, get down on the floor...right now and try it.  See how long you can hold this position.  It's a killer.

But Jillian doesn't ask that you just 'hold' this position....oh no, that'd be too easy!  (yea, right)...while in this position you do a 'jumping jack', 'leg twist' and some other crazy moves.  She really does try to kill you!

I'm wondering if I can use this position instead:

also called a plank.  My wrists would thank me :)

The routine went quickly today, probably because it was new and I was attempting to get my form correct.  

There are some balance moves that I thought I would have trouble with, but level one must have helped my balance muscles, cuz I didn't fall over!

BUT sweat!  WOW....literally rolling down my face.

Daniel's Promise all natural beauty products review

Neem Aloe Facial Scrub & Mask



This facial scrub and mask, made by Daniel Weaver of Daniel's Promise, is made with all natural products.   It comes in a powder form.  It is applied to a damp face with damp fingers to cleanse your skin.


If you prefer a deeper cleanse, mix equal amounts of oil or yogurt with the powder and apply to face.  After a few minutes, just rinse.  


I was sent a 4 oz jar to test on my skin.  Because I am known to be very sensitive to any cleansing product,  I was hesitant to try this.  To test my sensitivity, I applied a small amount to the inside of my arm overnight.  When I arose in the morning there was no rash or reaction so I gave it a try on my face.


I found it simple to use and left my face with a clean, soft feel.  The fact that the products are all natural and my skin was not sensitive to the ingredients was great. 


I am also very sensitive to scents.  My jar contained lavender and rosewood essential oils.  There is a light fragrance, but not overpowering.  I did find that hours later there was a faint scent of clay on my face...the main ingredient is bentonite clay.


Overall, I would recommend this product as a great facial cleanser.  Why add a bunch of chemicals to your skin when there are great alternative like what Daniel's Promise has to offer?


Daniel's Promise offers other all natural products that I'm sure are just as good as this one I tried.

Mystery of the Puzzle Bones review


Boys love an adventure.  So if they can't be in an adventure, how about giving them a chance to read about an adventure.  Mystery of the Puzzle Bones is just that an adventure with a mystery!


The book starts off with a bully chasing 2 boys, a scene which catches the reader's attention immediately.  Once the boys are safe in their 'underground' club house...they discover a puzzle of bones.   And now the reader is hooked.


Page after page is filled with fun and excitement.  But most importantly the story encourages children to include Jesus in their life situations and in their decision making.  


Author T.A. Smith saw the need for good Christian reading for boys.  Something that was exciting and suspenseful.  He hit the mark with his series of books called The Boardunders Club. 


This series is geared for reading ages of 8 - 14, but can be read aloud to younger children.  Oh yea, girls may enjoy the story too!

Toning with Jillian using the 30 Day Shred DVD

DAY ELEVEN AND TWELVE
3/4 & 3/5

Day eleven fell on Sunday.  Now Sunday is a VERY busy day for me.  BUT I was determined to get my workout done.  

Only waiting 1/2 hour after eating a huge taco salad (650 calories huge), I hit the mat.  Cramping did occur during the cardio, but I pushed through it.   After the 20 minute torture  routine was complete, I had to run out the door....no sitting and typing about my workout yesterday.

Day twelve brought me no energy at all.  I didn't even want to get out of bed.  Monday's are usually like that for me because weekends are constant on-the-go!  So I held off until 3:30 to get to it.  

I do think I'm ready for level 2.  I went through all circuts fairly easily.  I even used the 3# weights throughout.  I completed everything again.  

I am not doing this for weight loss.  I've had a bunch of people ask me why I am doing this because I am 'so thin'....my answer is always "clothes hide a lot".  Which they do.  But I don't need weight loss, just toning!  After 5 pregnancies I've got a bit of a 'pooch'.  Also, I'm working on getting my 'granny-flaps'.....you know, the upper arm flaps that swing back and forth when you wave...yea, I'm growing some.  I want grandchildren, but no flaps please!

Anyway, today while changing for my workout I noticed that my abs are toning.  They really are.  
I can see a difference...now THAT is motivation.

Also, I have much more energy.  I actually wake up in the morning feeling rested (except today).

Although I wish I could have all these results with less effort, I guess anything worth having is worth working for.

So thanks to  my Sampy-June for inviting me on this journey.  I'm 12 days in and feeling much better!

Confessions of a 30 Day Shredder


DAY TEN:  3/3/12

This really should be day eleven...

yup, I missed yesterday.  

The only time of day I could have completed my session would have been at 8 PM.  Because I have so much trouble with sleep , I didn't want to exercise before bedtime.  Last time I did that my sleep was worse than ever.  So I just made the decision to skip the day. 

That one day skip made to difference in today's workout.  I completed it without taking a break.  I still do not do the jump rope but substitute with butt kicks.  The jump rope is just too hard on my knees still.

I think I am  almost ready to move onto level 2. 

ALMOST... 

maybe at day 14. 

My soreness is minimal and I can complete all the moves successfully.  

My daughter suggested that I watch level 2 a few times before begin it, so I'll do that over the next 4 days.
